I was interested in learning about Apple’s recent update enabling support for the iPhone’s T-Mobile and Starlink. Thanks to SpaceX and T-Mobile’s direct-to-cell satellite service, this update allows users to send text messages even in areas without traditional coverage. While I am not a T-Mobile subscriber, it is only a matter of time before this technology comes to other providers.
As an avid cruiser, I wondered how this could eventually affect the Wi-Fi packages that cruise lines offer.
Since the current beta is limited to text messaging, there is no immediate threat that people will use their iPhones to replace the need for the ship’s Wi-Fi. Then, there is the need to have a “line of sight” for connectivity, thus necessitating the ship’s Wi-Fi for any indoor areas. Satellite services also typically come with data limits. Time will tell what those limits may be and how that could affect a cruiser’s need for the ship’s Wi-Fi.
While satellite connectivity on iPhones can enhance communication, it may not completely replace the need for the cruise line’s Wi-Fi for more comprehensive internet access.
